Abused Monkey Slave Kills Its Cruel Owner

09 March 2009

A monkey who tired of being forced to climb trees to pick coconuts killed his owner with a well-aimed coconut.

The owner died immediately from the monkey's throw from the top of a tree in the Thai Province of Nakorn Sri Thammarat, according to the Samui Express newspaper.

The newspaper said that Leilit Janchoom, 48, had beaten the monkey - named Brother Kwan - whenever he showed any hesitance to climb a tree.

The owner was insistent because he got the equivalent of 4p for every coconut picked.

But the monkey - it is claimed - apparently found the work boring, strenuous and unrewarding.

The monkey had to climb palms as high as 50 metres, said the report.

This news about the incident has shocked many people, especially monkey owners, on Koh Samui as even the victim’s wife Uthai Janchoom, 45, said the monkey, which they had bought for about £130, was lovable.
They had tamed the monkey and taught him to harvest other kinds of fruits on high trees as well.

On average, Brother Kwan could harvest 300 coconut fruits a day. Coconut-farm owners would hire him and pay Bt2 per fruit harvested.

After the incident, everyone was reportedly afraid to get close to the monkey except the victim’s brother-in-law as he and Luelit were together when they bought Brother Kwan from his former owner on Koh Samui.

A monkey expert told Samui Express that a monkey is a special animal as it can understand how human beings treat them.
The expert said that sometimes the owner should call his monkey son or daughter and establish himself as a father to establish bonding between them.

News of the attacks comes after scientists disclosed this week that a chimpanzee at a Swedish zoo became so annoyed at being gawked at by tourists in a zoo that he started creating weapons to hurl at them.

Santino the chimp would calmly collect stones and fashion discs made out of concrete even when the zoo was closed, to throw at visitors when they returned.

Scientists believe his behaviour is the strongest proof yet that humans are not the only creatures which can make plans for the future.
